Animals in Pain...

Pain is terribly powerful.  A pet in agony is often blinded to its surroundings, and will strike out at everything around it—including good samaritans who are attempting to save its life.

Even devoted family pets with no record of snapping have been known to bite their owner’s hand, sometimes with rather alarming ferocity, when the owner was just trying to carry the pet to the car for the trip to the emergency clinic.

No matter what you may think, be prepared for the worst.  Keep a muzzle handy, if for no other reason than emergencies. If you have no access to a muzzle, try a blanket or a coat to keep the pet’s mouth away from your hands and arms.
