Micah’s Spinal Injury – A Dog’s Story of Recovery
Micah is a nine and half-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback who was paralyzed in her back end when she arrived at Bothell Pet Hospital. The paralysis occurred after Micah slipped outside resulting in a spinal injury. Dr. Kovar diagnosed her with a likely ruptured intervertebral disc. The option of referral for an MRI was offered but the owners elected a more conservative treatment plan.
Micah was hospitalized for 10 days and treatment involved multiple medications, cage rest, and supportive care. After hospitalization Micah’s owners took her home and prepared to give her every chance for improvement. She was still not walking and needed to be carried with a sling when going outside.
Through dedication, hard work, and daily treatments of physical therapy, Micah is now able to walk. Although she is still very weak and needs to rebuild her lost muscle, we are hopeful she will regain much, if not all, of her previous active lifestyle. Micah’s story is an affirmation of how optimism and patience can result in a happy ending.
