Safety Tips for Your Dog or Cat on July 4

Dog ear phones

The upcoming 4th of July holiday is one that most of us humans love, but it can be terrifying for most dogs and cats.

The noise from fireworks can cause pets anxiety and fear, and many pets will bolt at the sound of the loud explosions.

Below are some steps you can take to help prevent tragedies from happening:

Keep pets indoors, when possible, in a confined and secure area. (You can even keep the TV or radio on for background noise.)

If your pet must be outside, make sure fencing and gates are secure to prevent your pet from bolting. Consider having a kennel area where your pet can stay to feel safe and protected.

Make sure your pet is wearing a secure collar with up-to-date ID tags.

Consider microchipping your pet for extra protection. This is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to reunite you with your pet if they should become lost.

Talk to your veterinarian in advance about the possibility of tranquilizers if you have a dog that is especially scared by fireworks.

Please note our Holiday Hours: Bothell Pet Hospital will be closed on the 4th of July in observance of the holiday; we’ll open again on July 5th at 8:00 am. Have a safe and happy 4th!
